Friend of Weston – Joe’s Murals

Hi Joe,

Welcome to Humans of Weston. We are delighted to have you here, so let’s get to know you better…

Firstly tell us a bit about yourself in a sentence or two…

I am a 27 year old, self taught mural artist. Where most see a wall, I see a blank canvas! I have been an artist my entire life, and a professional artist for just over a year.

[Joe also takes commissions for pencil portraits and artworks on canvas]

Now a few questions:

How would you describe your art?

My art is a mixture of different styles. I am quite a versatile artist. I feel that my use of colour is very important, I like to paint BIG! My style could be described as varying from abstract surrealism to realism and illustrative.

Was art a deliberate career choice?

I struggled for quite a long time with being able to get my artwork noticed, or even make any money from my work! There were times when I felt like giving up and then one day by chance, I started painting murals in my friends and families homes and it just took off from there!

What does your art say about you?

I think my artwork has a certain intensity that reflects my personality within it.

What brought you to Weston?

I have a lot of clients based in Weston and they seem to love my work, so I keep coming back!

How has Weston been a part of your creativity?

Growing up in Bristol, Weston was a frequent weekend destination for me as a child. I think the scenery of the pier and the seafront had a big impact on my visual development from an early age.

Where are your favourite places in Weston to seek out inspiration?

Although it’s closed down …I found Weston aquarium extremely inspiring when I was younger and would visit there a lot with my parents.

Has anyone in Weston supported or influenced you?

My customers in Weston have supported my business and my artwork from the very beginning!

What advice would you give to young artists in the town?

My advice for young aspiring artists would be to never give up on your dreams. Don’t let your failures define you, use it as a stepping stone…. and always keep finding new ways to improve yourself as an artist and as a human being!

What are you creating at the moment, or what is next?

I paint private murals for customers in their homes, mostly around Weston super mare. I just finished an enchanted garden and I’m currently working on a customer’s playroom.
